Australia’s three-dimensional approach is the most distinctive element of the country’s foreign policy. In this event, Dr Michael Fullilove, Executive Director of Lowy Institute, outlines these three dimensions: height, Australia’s long-standing strategic instinct to align with a like-minded global ally; width, Australia’s participation and ongoing commitment to international institutions and multilateralism; and depth, Australia’s strong relations in its immediate region.
Dr Michael Fullilove AM is the Executive Director of the Lowy Institute, Australia’s leading foreign policy think tank. Dr Fullilove has previously worked as a lawyer, a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., and an adviser to the Australian Prime Minister. He completed his doctorate in international relations as a Rhodes scholar at the University of Oxford. He writes widely on Australian foreign policy, US foreign policy and global issues and has published a number of books.
Mikael Mattlin is a Research Professor at FIIA. He is the head of FIIA’s Center on Global Orders and China (CORD). Earlier he has been Professor of Chinese Studies (University of Helsinki) and Professor of Political Science at the University of Turku, where he leads the Academy of Finland funded ForAc-research project and holds the title of Docent. Mattlin has published extensively in leading academic journals, e.g., in The China Quarterly, Journal of Contemporary China, Information, Communication & Society, Co¬operation and Conflict and The Pacific Review. In 2022, he published the first comprehensive Finnish-language research-based book on the Chinese political system (Vastapaino), together with two other leading Finnish China experts.
