China at a crossroads

SEMINAR
11.11.2026 12:00 - 14:45

China is emerging as an economic, political, and technological powerhouse, whose influence is increasingly felt worldwide. Today, China’s economy and society are advanced and sophisticated, yet its autocratic political order does not resemble Western countries. China’s transformation challenges many established assumptions, from authoritarian adaptability and democratisation to economic norms and innovation ability. It is therefore essential to understand the basics of the Chinese political system, how it works, and why.

China today displays remarkable strengths. It is an industrial and export powerhouse that leads globally in a broad range of advanced technologies. Yet, at the same time its domestic economy is seemingly perennially in the doldrums, civil society has been subdued, and tensions with neighbours, as well as the US and the EU, abound. Underlying everything is a contradiction between a political order and a party-state that portrays stability and strength, yet cannot accommodate even the mildest reform proposal, let alone challenge.

In the run-up to the next Party Congress in the autumn of 2027, China finds itself at a crossroads in state-society relations, and future direction of its economic policies and foreign policy orientation. This seminar will discuss these challenges in light of the new book China’s Political Order: Historical Origins, Institutions and Uncertain Future by professors Mikael Mattlin, Lauri Paltemaa and Juha A. Vuori. The book is published by Brill in October 2026.
