R2P and Post-conflict Recovery in Africa

The Finnish Institute of International Affairs
9.10.2009 10:00 - 12:00

The Responsibility to protect (R2P) has become a key term in contemporary peace operations, even though for different actors it means different things. Nonetheless, the derivates of the R2P framework are very consequential, such as the responsibility to rebuild, but still policy instruments are largely under-defined.

Discussing these themes and more:

Dr. Wafula Okumu
Senior Research Fellow, African Security Analysis Programme,
Institute for Security Studies (ISS), Pretoria, South Africa

Mr. Richard Cornwell
Senior Research Fellow, ISS

Dr. Mika Aaltola
Academy of Finland Research fellow,
Finnish Institute of International Affairs

Ms. Kirsi Joenpolvi
Deputy Director, Programmes,
Crisis Management Initiative

Dr. Touko Piiparinen
Postdoctoral Researcher,
Centre of Excellence in Global Governance Research, University of Helsinki

The ISS is a regional research institute based in Pretoria but operating all across sub-Saharan Africa. As a leading African human security research institution, the Institute is guided by a broad approach to security, reflective of the changing nature and origin of threats to human development.
