New Insights on Jihadism and Radicalisation:

Deadly violence inspired by or directed by jihadist terrorist organisations reached Finnish shores in 2017. Authorities across Europe have beefed up domestic and international cooperative efforts to prevent and address this new wave of terrorism in Europe. Success requires a holistic understanding of how actors such as al-Qa’ida and ISIS gain both physical and mental footholds, increase influence among locals, recruit, fund themselves and, ultimately, make global jihad attractive. Understanding how these terror networks use analog and digital approaches to embed themselves in societies across the Middle East is critical. In Yemen, analysing the respective approaches of Islamic State and al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula - al- Qa’ida’s most active group for much of the past decade - provides crucial insights into how such groups can endure, even in the face of massive counter-terror campaigns.
