The EU’s Climate Agenda: what are the next steps?

The event takes place 2 February 2021 at 15:00 EET (14:00 CET).

In December 2020, the EU announced its new target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, aiming for a cut of at least 55% compared to 1990. The new target should contribute to the long-term climate neutrality goal codified in the forthcoming EU climate law, as well as to the broader agenda of the European Green Deal.

However, the EU faces both internal and external challenges in the implementation of the climate agenda. Internal divisions have led to protracted negotiations on the 2030 target, and not all issues have been solved. While the EU can now update its nationally determined contribution to the Paris Agreement ahead of COP 26, different levels of ambition concerning emission reductions persist across the globe. How will the Union address these domestic and international challenges?
