A discussion with German Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer: European defence cooperation during the EU Council Presidency

Webinar
3.7.2020 10:00 - 10:45

When Germany holds the EU Council Presidency in the second half of 2020, it faces a full European agenda and an increasingly challenging international environment. While the presidency’s focus will be on the recovery from the Covid-19 crisis, Germany also aims to improve the EU’s ability to act on security and defence matters. For example, a key initiative of the German defence minister is a joint threat assessment and the development of a “Strategic Compass” for the EU.

Finland cooperates closely with Germany on security and defence issues in the EU framework, as part of EU-NATO cooperation and in civilian and military operations in Africa and the Middle East. Both countries also share common interests concerning the security situation in northern Europe. Against this backdrop, Germany’s views on global challenges and Europe’s options to tackle them are extremely relevant for Finland and its Nordic partners.

In the first week of the German EU Council Presidency, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer joins FIIA to discuss the joint regional and global challenges of Germany and Finland, Germany’s plans for the EU Council Presidency, and the role of Germany in European security. She is the German Federal Minister of Defence and party leader of the German Christian Democratic Union.
