Global displacement is rising sharply as conflicts, political instability, climate change and structural inequalities increasingly intersect. In Sub-Saharan Africa, where most international migration continues to take place within the region, forced and internal displacement are also growing and becoming increasingly protracted. These dynamics interact with changing patterns of mobility, pressures on natural resources and livelihoods, and wider geopolitical and economic disruptions. Addressing them requires moving beyond crisis response towards longer-term approaches that strengthen resilience, create opportunities for orderly mobility and migration, and integrate displacement, including its root causes, into development planning. African-led solutions, meaningful participation of local communities and young people, and investments in prevention and sustainable development are central to this effort.
This panel discussion addresses the urgent need to strengthen responses to displacement and forced migration in an international context of shifting priorities, scale and forms of funding in international development efforts. The discussion will bring together perspectives on locally led development and youth participation; Finland’s development policy priorities and multilateral engagement and opportunities for Finnish companies to support sustainable growth and strengthen local enterprises. Together, the event will explore how development cooperation, financing and private-sector engagement can support African priorities while building more genuine and mutually beneficial partnerships.
