Charly’s work focuses on international security issues, with a geographic focus on Nordic and transatlantic security (including NATO), as well as U.S. foreign and defense policy. Thematically he studies the impact of technology on society and warfare, hybrid warfare/conflict, information operations and communication, crisis management & peacekeeping, as well as global geopolitical and geoeconomic trends.
Charly has been a visiting research fellow at the Changing Character of War Centre at Pembroke College (Oxford University), where he studied the impact of the Information Age on the character of war. He has also been on exchange at the Institute of International Affairs at the University of Iceland, and an international affairs adviser to the senior leadership of the Finnish Defence Forces.
Charly publishes in English, Swedish and Finnish, and speaks to a range of audiences at universities, NGOs, private companies and large international conferences. He is frequently cited by media and has appeared on thousands of tv and radio broadcasts, including global broadcasters such as CNN, BBC, Sky News, and Al Jazeera, and has been cited by media such as New York Times, Washington Post, Guardian, Politico, and Le Monde. Charly is a Captain (reserves) in the Finnish Defence Forces and in 2020 he was made a Knight of the Order of the White Rose of Finland.
