Dr. Heidi Huuhtanen is a Senior Research Fellow at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, specialized in the Middle East region. Her interests include Middle East international affairs and regional power relations, security and governance in conflict contexts, transitional governance and peace processes.
She has extensive experience of the region as a researcher, policy analyst and as a conflict resolution practitioner in several conflict contexts. Before joining FIIA she was a Senior Advisor at the German Berghof Foundation as well as a Programme Director and the Middle East and North Africa Head of the Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation CMI. She led several conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts for example in Syria, Palestine and Yemen.
She was also a Visiting Researcher at the University of Helsinki and has lectured many university courses on Midde East conflict analysis and resolution. She worked as a researcher at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs also in 2003-2008. She has published a co-edited book and several reports and briefing papers related to the region. She has also worked in policy planning at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland.
Dr. Huuhtanen has a PhD from the University of Durham, UK and MA from the University of Helsinki.
