In its meeting on 19 August 2024, the Board of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs has unanimously appointed Professor Hiski Haukkala as the Director of FIIA. The five-year term of Haukkala begins on 1 January 2025 or as otherwise agreed.

Doctor of Social Sciences Hiski Haukkala is a Professor in international politics at Tampere University. He acted as Secretary General and Chief of Staff of Cabinet at the Office of the President of the Republic of Finland in 2018 and 2021-2024. Haukkala has previously worked as a government official at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland and as a researcher at FIIA.

The Chair of the Board of FIIA Klaus Korhonen notes that all applicants in the final stage of the recruitment process would have excelled at the Director position.

“The final decision was made based on what FIIA needs now and in the coming years. The new Director must steer FIIA in a tightened economic situation and at the same time be able develop the Institute’s functions. It’s a question of leading an expert organisation, which is a very demanding task”, says Korhonen.
