Mikael Wigell has been appointed director of the Global Security research programme at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs. His appointment is for the next five-year term from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2024, but he will start in his new position already November 15th 2019.
Wigell’s current research interests include hybrid threats, great power strategic behavior and international political economy. He is also an expert on Latin American political economy and internationally renowned for his geoeconomics research. Wigell is also adjunct professor at the University of Tampere and he has previously worked as visiting scholar at Oxford University, post-doctoral researcher at the Academy of Finland, and visiting fellow at the Universidad Torcuato di Tella, Buenos Aires. Wigell is currently president of the Finnish International Studies Association and he holds a PhD from the London School of Economics.
The principal responsibility of the programme director is to lead the research programme and to take part in the planning of the Institute’s research activities. In addition, programme directors have their individual research agendas.
