A new three-year programme period began at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA) on 1 January 2023. Four new research programmes were launched:
The Finnish Foreign Policy, Northern European Security and NATO research programme is led by Dr. Harri Mikkola. Dr. Juha Jokela will act as Programme Director of the European Union and Strategic Competition research programme, Dr. Arkady Moshes as Programme Director of the Russia, the EU’s Eastern Neighbourhood and Eurasia research programme, and Dr. Katja Creutz as Programme Director of the Global Security and Governance research programme.
The new research programme period is complemented by separate research centers and cross-cutting themes. At the beginning of the year, the Center on Global Orders and China (CORD), led by Dr. Mikael Mattlin, was launched. The Center on U.S. Politics and Power (CUSPP), led by Leading Researcher Charly Salonius-Pasternak, will also continue its operations in the new programme period. A new research center on climate change policy is set to be launched later this year, led by of Research Professor Antto Vihma.
The programmes are complemented by the two cross-cutting themes of geoeconomics and of great power politics and foresight. Dr. Sinikukka Saari started as Research Director of great power politics and foresight on 16 January 2023. Research Director Mikael Wigell will continue as Research Director of geoeconomics.
With the new research period, two new researchers have started at FIIA. Senior Research Fellow Margarita Zavadskaya joined the Russia, EU Eastern Neighbourhood and Eurasia research programme and Senior Research Fellow Manuel Müller joined the European Union and Strategic Competition research programme in the beginning of the year.
