WE ARE LOOKING FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS!

The Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA) is announcing an opportunity for university students to get involved in the REWEU project led by the EUROPEUM Institute in Prague in cooperation with seven European partners. The project is financed by the European Commission.

Assignment

  • The task is to create a poster individually or in groups of up to 3 members on the topic ”Big bang enlargement of the EU in 2004: a perspective from Finland”. Be prepared to present your work (in English) – the winning team will be invited to give a short presentation at the national conference “20 VUOTTA SUURESTA ITÄLAAJENTUMISESTA: LESSONS FOR THE NEXT EU ENLARGEMENT ROUND” organized 10 September 2024 at Tiedekulma, Helsinki.

  • In the presentation, students can use period photos, quotes from public figures and politicians, interviews with citizens, newspaper articles, official documents and other sources.

  • The project aims to make visible the perspective of young people on the significance of the EU’s 2004 enlargement when Czechia, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia joined the EU.

Why participate?

  • A committee will select one winning presentation. The authors will be invited to the national conference in Helsinki, 10 September 2024. The high-level event hosts top-notch speakers from the European academia and Finnish political life. The bilingual event (Finnish and English) analyses the past and future of EU enlargement, including from the point of view of young people.

  • As part of their participation in the conference, FIIA will arrange travel and accommodation in Helsinki for one night for the selected students traveling from outside the Helsinki region.

Thanks to participation in the conference, students will have the opportunity to:

  • present their work in front of an expert audience and actively participate in a discussion reflecting the 20 years since the 2004 enlargement and the future of EU enlargement

  • establish contacts with experts on the EU and European integration from Finland and abroad

  • experience participating in expert discussions with representatives from think tanks and academia

  • practice and improve presentation skills

How to get involved?

  • Send your poster to anu.ruokamo@fiia.fi.

  • The deadline for submission is Thursday 5 September 2024 at 23:59.
