International climate policy has moved to an era of implementation. Within the framework of the Paris Agreement, nearly all countries have set national climate targets, and an increasing number have enshrined them in law. As target deadlines approach, a critical question emerges: what happens when climate targets are delayed or missed?
Last summer’s record-breaking heatwaves, floods, and droughts serve as a reminder that the climate crisis will not wait for new timelines. The event will explore the consequences of delayed or unmet climate targets and the risks that threaten the delivery of climate commitments. How can unmet climate commitments affect countries’ international reputation, and the credibility of climate policy in general? And what role can the media, civil society, and international governance play in keeping up with the commitments?
