Four issues have dominated US security interests in Latin America in recent years: Drugs, transnational organized crime, illegal immigration and the growing presence of China. The threats have evolved, and successive US administrations have used different policy tools to address them. The endurance of three authoritarian regimes, Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela also have been a persistent challenge.
Today, after a period of relative neglect as the US focused on the war in Afghanistan, the Asia Pacific region, Ukraine and the Middle East, the new Trump Administration is turning attention to the region, issuing emergency declarations and employing new law enforcement mechanisms against many of the threats.
In this episode of Transatlantic Currents, we will discuss US policy towards the region with Ambassador Todd Robinson, Former Assistant Secretary for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement at the Department of State, former Charge of the US Embassy in Venezuela and US Ambassador to Guatemala.
