The Finnish Institute of International Affairs has received funding for the new project Global connections and collaborative solutions for sustainable water security (GloWater) by the Strategic Research Council. The grant of 471 227 euros was awarded for a three-year period from 1 December 2024 until 31 November 2027. An additional period of three years from 2027 until 2030 has also been planned for the project.

GloWater aims to develop sustainable water security solutions and joint governance models with the public sector, private sector, and civil society. Its goal is to create a new model of sustainable water security as well as a framework for it which combines planetary resilience, governance, and comprehensive security.

The world’s freshwater resources are heading towards a crisis from both sustainability and security perspectives, FIIA’s Research Professor Antto Vihma, who will be working on GloWater, says about the background of the project.

The project aims to strengthen the capabilities of Finnish actors and enhance Finland’s global impact with measures such as corporate responsibility and water diplomacy.

This significant fundings allows us to study the global connections of sustainable water security in a multidisciplinary way. Finland’s significance as well as the risks posed by the changing environment will be clarified, Vihma describes.

The GloWater project is carried out in collaboration with the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke), Aalto University and the University of Eastern Finland. It is led by Syke’s Leading Researcher Suvi Sojamo. The project team of FIIA consists of Antto Vihma, Postdoctoral Fellow Karoliina Hurri and Leading Researcher Emma Hakala.
