FIIA is happy to announce that Docent Mikael Mattlin has joined FIIA as Research Professor for the term 1 August 2022 – 31 December 2025. Dr Mattlin will reinforce FIIA’s China expertise and will be leading the new China research centre at FIIA, to be launched at the start of 2023. Prior to his joining FIIA, Mikael Mattlin has been Professor of Political Science and Senior Lecturer of International Politics at the University of Turku. He also leads the Academy of Finland-funded ForAc-research project (https://sites.utu.fi/forac). Previously Mattlin has also held positions as Professor of Chinese Studies in the University of Helsinki (2018–19), TIAS Collegium Researcher (2018–20), Senior Lecturer in International Politics in the University of Turku (2014–17), Research Fellow in The Finnish Institute of International Affairs (2011–13), and University Lecturer of World Politics in the University of Helsinki (2008–10).

Dr Mattlin’s research expertise includes China’s political system and foreign policies, economic statecraft, Taiwan’s political system and Cross-Strait relations, as well as negotiation simulations in international relations.
