In its meeting on 27 May, 2024, the Board of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA) selected five candidates for the next phase of recruitment for the Director position: Mika Aaltola, Tuomas Forsberg, Hiski Haukkala, Mikael Mattlin, and Kristi Raik.

The applicants were evaluated based on the following criteria:

  1. Vision for the future of the institute
  2. Academic achievements
  3. Familiarity with the institute’s field of work
  4. Leadership experience
  5. Diversity of work and educational background, including international experience
  6. Societal impact

Interviews with the selected candidates and an external scientific evaluation are scheduled to take place in June 2024. The term for the Director of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs is five years. The next term will be from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2029. A total of 21 applications were received by the deadline for the position.
